Many years ago, having spent many hours mastering the basic techniques of using my satnav, I realised that without computer skills it would have have taken even longer. I was impressed when I read in an online forum someone’s opinion that there must be dozens of Garmin eTrex h's that had been given as presents and pushed away in sock drawers because the initial learning curve was so steep. So after about six months experience of using it I decided to start the Satnav Ramblers group. A satnav can be a useful additional aid for a rambler! A paper map is still the main thing needed. A compass is still needed in case you forget to carry spare batteries! We have all now moved onto smartphones and the ViewRanger app. This is used in many countries and in the UK uses Ordnance Survey 1:25000 and 1:50000 maps as well as others. DerekD Group Leader |
