Cows, calves and a bull

Priors Hardwick - Upper Boddington Wed Sept 25th

Peter C and I had an interesting ramble on Sept 18th. We changed the planned walk so Peter could do a pre walk/recce. It was a beautiful summers day. The first part went as planned. Then we had to divert because of Cows, calves and a bull together in a field. The planned 4.5 miles became 7 miles. The pub in Upper Boddington was closed at lunchtime. However, we had a friendly welcome and a late sandwich in Southam at the Market Tavern. It was a good day out and we enjoyed it.

Extra Walk! Stratford - Barford 7.7m - Linear Bus Pass ramble Thurs 1st Aug

We had a good walk. It was a bit overgrown near the River Avon before Hampton Lucy. We ended the walk near Wasperton as it was very hot. We had covered the best part of the walk. We caught the bus back to Warwick from the main road.

Start point for walk SP 205 554 on A439 Stratford to Warwick road.

The first part of the ramble

Thorpe Mandeville - Sulgrave - Culworth 6.2 miles - Wed 24th July

It was a good walk and the pub was still good!

Meet at my house to share transport at 9.30 a.m. or see directions below. Please email me if you are coming.

This walk is in a beautiful part of Northamptonshire close to the Oxfordshire border, like the last walk. It also passes near to the site of the Battle of Edgcote 1469 which took place during the Wars of the Roses.  There is a beautiful view of the ancient battlefield. We enjoyed the area and pub so much that I have arranged this walk to stop at the same pub. It has about one mile in common with the Edgcote - Culworth 6.35m walk done on Wed 26th June.

So, I suggest we stop at the excellent Red Lion pub in Culworth after about 3.75 miles walking. We had a very tasty light lunch served by friendly staff. That leaves about 2.5 miles after lunch.

Directions
Take the M40 South. At J11 (Banbury) take the second left onto the A422. At the next roundabout take the first exit onto the B4525 Banbury Lane. After 2 to 2.5 miles turn left onto Banbury Lane to Thorpe Mandeville. Go through the village and park near the church. The journey is about 27 miles and takes about 40 minutes from Warwick.

Edgcote - Culworth 6.35 miles - Wed 26th June - Revised times.

We had an excellent walk is in a beautiful part of Northamptonshire close to the Oxfordshire border. It passes near to the site of the Battle of Edgcote 1469 which took place during the Wars of the Roses.  The White Queen TV series currently on ITV on sunday evening mentions the battle and takes place during this period. Warwick the Kingmaker plays a prominent part.

We had a very tasty light lunch at the the Red Lion pub in Culworth after about 4 miles walking. I have modified the walk slightly since completion.

Directions
Take the M40 South. At J11 (Banbury) take the first left onto the A361 towards Daventry. After about 3 miles take a right turn signposted Edgcote. After 0.75 miles park on the left on the grass verge after a group of houses.

Yarningale Common - High Cross 5 miles

This is a higgledy-piggledy walk which is a bit shorter than usual, so that anyone who wishes may go to the U3A anniversary celebration in the afternoon. The Language café at the Dormer centre is open to all members from 2 - 4 p.m.

It should be a good walk in a very nice area. Park at the parking place on Yarningale common.
Grid Ref SP 189 659 The walk starts at 10 a.m. as usual. I suggest we do not have a pub lunch because of the Language café. We will have the usual 'banana' stop allowing time for sandwiches.

North Newington - Broughton 6.5 miles

This was very muddy in parts. Where is not? Once again we navigated around the walk without losing anybody!! The Saye & Sele Arms in Broughton was very upmarket and the hosts very friendly.

A new career move for Peter C! I just missed capturing the sheep swirling around him.

Chesterton - Harbury 7.2 miles Wed 30th Jan

After an inadvertent detour via the motorway service station onto the motorway, back to Warwick ......... We had an excellent ramble on country lanes. The paths were water logged so the walk was modified and the actual track is shown below. This track includes our visit to Bill's house for half past elevenses where he showed us some of his holiday videos  professionally produced by himself. We then had a very good carvery at the Shakespeare Inn at 5.50 per person. Fresh meat! The beer was also excellent. We will return!
